In the past, I have celebrated nearly all stages of the annual summer tradition of Screen on the Green, from the spring announcement of the schedule to the last screening in August. This year – when the SOTG crowd has had more to celebrate than ever, after the festival was canceled and then restored – work has prevented me from enjoying half this year’s line up (wailing and gnashing of teeth) or even posting about it so far.
But don’t cry for me, Argentina: the best is yet to come, and there is always room for more on the Tarp-o-Fun. (Seriously – the tarp used to save our spot could probably cover half a block!) Residents of DC and its environs, consider this your invitation. Bring some snacks to share, and enjoy the bounty of what everyone else brings – as well as some card games, too – while we wait for the sun to go down.
Monday, August 3 - On The Waterfront
Powerful, man-vs-union-racketeers drama set on the New Jersey docks remains a contenda. Winner of 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Elia Kazan).
Marlon Brando was named Best Actor after being shut out the 3 previous years. Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger were all nominated for Best Supporting Actor. All lost.
A very pregnant Eva Marie Saint, however, picked up an Oscar for her effort.
Monday, August 10 - Rebel Without A Cause
Landmark tale of teen angst is still disturbing today. This is also one of the movies in which James Dean will be immortalized as the ultimate rebel before he died before his time.
Natalie Wood and James Dean star as the tragic lovers, while Sal Mineo provides sensitive support as the outcast, Plato.
Direction by Nicholas Ray takes full advantage of the wide screen canvas.
