“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” ~ Matthew 13:44-46
We live in a world of diversification. Whether you’re talking about an investment portfolio or your skill set, wisdom is functionally defined as keeping your options open. Don’t commit yourself to any one thing wholeheartedly.
Such a perspective in matters terrestrial is not, in itself, foolish. What I fear, looking at my own life, is applying that perspective to matters of the Kingdom.
Jesus isn’t simply telling stories to hold the crowd’s attention here. He is being as straightforward as he could possibly be in saying, “this is how much entrance into the Kingdom is worth – your everything.” What would you think about a person who sold everything they had – not proverbially, but literally?
The even more devastating question, for me, is – what in my life evidences being completely sold out for the Kingdom?
