Whether you had a 1.20.09 bumper sticker on your car or gave every fiber of your being campaigning for Republicans in the last cycle, the sun rose this morning – just like it has every day for the last eight years. The world didn’t become a different place, for good or ill, at noon today. Humanity did not fundamentally change. I am still selfish. It was still freezing cold on the Mall. People aren’t striving to get out of each other’s way as they (in vain) seek a vacant port-a-potty. The abomination of slavery still exists. People are still going to lose their homes in foreclosure; others will get married. Some people will still allow their lives to be ruled by fear. Others will act on inspiration they’ve received over the last few months. Cures to diseases will still elude science, but some patients will still miraculously recover.
Regardless of what side you are on, if indeed you are on a side, remember that we have this in common: the sun and the rain and the call to be perfect… which is impossible apart from Christ, not a perfect political system. And the sun will, by God’s grace, rise again tomorrow.
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” ~Matthew 5:44-48

It's easy to lose track of the reality that elections do not dictate how God will act. Indeed, quite the other way around.
Meanwhile our commands to be Christlike remain. What a wonderful relief and also a solemn privilege.
